School Story:
Most of you know I was not a very good student. In high school I focused all of my time on basketball, baseball, and golf. When it came time to go to the school I had always wanted to attend, I was turned down for admission. So, I attended Anderson College for a semester, applied to The Citadel, and I was accepted. If you have ever seen the movie Rudy, that was me. He was doing everything possible to get into Notre Dame and I was doing everything I could to get spend time between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers.
I was fortunate to become a member of Mike Company. Darin Delk was my roommate for four years. We became very good friends except for the times we were not talking to each other because of a spat. Also, the other guys in Mike Company were great. We had a nice mix of military guys, country boys, academic studs, and athletes. Even to this day all of us stay in touch on a regular basis.
Knob year I went out for basketball with Kip Haley and others. Unfortunately, we were cut quickly. For years after graduation I dreamed I was on The Citadel basketball team and we made it to the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately for me and the school, the Big Dance is still a dream. But, the boys in Blue will get there sooner than later.
I walked 31 tours, was a member of the 1990 Summerall Guards (Mud King), won the intramural free throw championship my sophomore year, I made good enough grades to graduate, and generally enjoyed my experience at the Military College of South Carolina.
